The Artist
Sherry Ying Ruden's practice bridges traditional Chinese materials with contemporary abstraction. Working primarily with rice paper, ink, pigment, and cold wax, she honors cultural heritage while exploring new visual language. Rather than relying on brushwork alone, she manipulates the rice paper itself—dyeing, layering, and distressing the surface—letting the material’s natural grain guide the composition. This approach reverses the traditional process of mounting artwork afterward. Her method is both intentional and spontaneous, allowing imagery to evolve organically and forging a connection through the rich surface and texture of her work. She refers to this as Zì-Rán (自然), meaning “the natural way” or “the flow of things.”
Sherry’s aesthetic draws from both Eastern tradition and Western modernism. Her work reflects a deep appreciation for balance, structure, and improvisation—shaped by her background in Chinese art, Zen philosophy, and design experience. Sherry has found increasing freedom in abstraction, using it to express emotion, tension, and harmony beyond the boundaries of representation. Her compositions often spark curiosity through visual rhythm, materiality, and subtle forms that resonate on an intuitive level.
